Hexagram 47, Oppression: The Lake Is Dry, the Plant Still Waits

Oppression is Hexagram 47 of the I Ching: a lake without water. For heartbreak that makes every small task feel heavy, and a dry plant still waiting.

The potted plant on the windowsill has gone several days without water: the soil is cracked around the rim and the leaves droop. The person beside it still has not got up, because since that relationship ended, everything takes an effort. The I Ching has a hexagram that describes just such a lake. Today is the seventeenth day of the ninth lunar month. Today is a Gui You day, in the Frost’s Descent solar term, under the Bi officer of Closing, a day traditionally associated with closing things up, filling holes and storing things away.

Is it normal for every small task to feel heavy after heartbreak?

It is very common for even small tasks to feel heavy after heartbreak. Everyone has a limited supply of strength, and a great sadness takes its share first. Small tasks such as watering a plant, cooking a meal or answering a message are pushed to the back of the queue, then forgotten.

The loss is quite specific: the energy for small daily tasks, and the habit of caring for yourself. Being drained now is an ordinary part of a great sadness; you do not have to explain it to anyone. If several days pass and nothing feels manageable, telling a loved one or a qualified professional is also a small thing worth doing.

What does Hexagram 47, Oppression, say about a lake without water?

Hexagram 47 is Kun, Oppression: lake above, water below. Kun means being hemmed in, exhausted. The water has flowed lower than the lake bed, leaving dry earth behind. The image says: the lake is still a lake; its water has simply gone.

The Great Image begins with “a lake without water.” The Judgment also says “words are not believed.” When you are drained, even your words can seem to carry less weight. This hexagram follows Hexagram 46, Pushing Upward and precedes Hexagram 48, The Well. Emptiness stands immediately before the well.

What should you ask the I Ching about love when you feel drained?

When consulting the I Ching about love while drained, ask about something you are about to do, not about the person who has left. For example: which small thing should I do first today? Cast when the question genuinely rises in your heart; that is the meaning of the moment and day of the stirred heart.

The hexagram does not say whether that relationship remains or has ended, nor what your former partner thinks. It only describes where the person asking stands: a lake just emptied. Your part is to choose a small step after reading, and even the smallest step is real.

So what can you do today?

Try exactly one thing today: pour a glass of water and water that plant. Just one plant, then sit down and rest. There is no need to decide anything about the relationship that has passed, nor to wait until you are no longer sad. There only needs to be one place that receives water from your own hand.

A day traditionally suited to filling holes and storing things away also fits this small act: keep water for the place nearest you. If you are unsure whether to wait until the sadness passes or do one small thing first, cast a hexagram and then decide.
