Hexagram 5, Waiting: Where You Wait Matters More Than How Long

Hexagram 5 does not measure waiting in time, it measures it by where you stand. Five places to wait, five outcomes — and the best one is where the food is.

Hexagram 5, Waiting, is the fifth of the 64 hexagrams and describes waiting in front of a danger you cannot yet cross. What few readers notice is that it does not measure waiting in time. It measures it by where you stand.

Today is Saturday 5 September 2026, the 24th of the seventh lunar month, a Ren-Wu day. The Ren stem is Water and it overcomes the Wu branch, which is Fire — the calendars call this the upper overcoming the lower.

Hexagram 5 has exactly that shape: Kan, water, placed above; Qian, heaven, placed below. The danger is overhead, the strength is underfoot.

What does Hexagram 5 mean?

Xu means to wait. The judgement reads: "Waiting. If you are sincere, you have light and success. Perseverance brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water."

The strange part is the last clause. A hexagram that counsels waiting ends by counselling movement — you wait in order to be able to go, not in order to avoid going.

Why does the hexagram advise eating and drinking?

The image commentary reads: "Clouds rise up to heaven: the superior man eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer." In a hexagram about waiting in front of danger, the only instruction is to keep the body strong.

The clouds already fill the sky; the rain will certainly come, only nobody knows when, and nobody can hurry cloud into rain. What remains is not impatience but stamina, so that when the rain falls you can move at once.

How does the I Ching distinguish kinds of waiting?

By distance from the danger, not by duration. The six lines place the waiting person in the meadow far off, then on the sand, then in the mud, then in blood, then among wine and food. The closer to the water's edge, the heavier the judgement.

Line one: "waiting in the meadow" — no blame. Line two: "waiting on the sand" — some gossip, but good fortune in the end.

Line three is the heaviest: "waiting in the mud brings the enemy on". Once your feet are sinking, the trouble is one you summoned yourself.

What does the fifth line say?

Line five reads: "waiting at meat and drink; perseverance brings good fortune." It is the cleanest favourable judgement in the whole hexagram, and it describes someone waiting where there is food, not where the danger is.

Set beside line three, the point of the hexagram is plain. The same waiting: the one in the mud invites the enemy, the one at the table is judged fortunate. The difference is the place you stand.

Why does Hexagram 5 suit the Ren-Wu day, 5 September 2026?

5 September 2026 is a Ren-Wu day in the Chu-shu solar term. The Ren stem is Water, sitting above, overcoming the Wu branch, Fire, below. Hexagram 5 likewise puts Kan water over Qian heaven — the same picture: the wet above, the hot beneath.

The calendars read an upper-overcomes-lower day as workable but costly, with large matters likely to meet resistance. That is nearly the definition of this hexagram: strength ready below, road blocked above.

So what should you do today?

Take one thing that is hanging because you are waiting on someone else, then ask one question: where am I waiting? Hexagram 5 does not ask you to shorten the wait, only to step out of the risky spot while it lasts.

Checking your phone every ten minutes is waiting in the mud. Sending everything you owe, then putting the phone down and eating a proper meal, is waiting at the table. The wait is unchanged; the outcome is not.

Yesterday's article covered the hardest hexagram with the best judgement; today's counsels waiting and still says to cross the great water.
