Hexagram 11, Peace: Heaven Below Is What Makes It Flow

Hexagram 11, Peace, puts Heaven beneath Earth and calls that open passage. Turn it the natural way up and you get Standstill. Why does the I Ching invert it?

Hexagram 11, Peace is the 11th of the 64 hexagrams and means open passage. The odd thing is that the I Ching places Earth on top and Heaven underneath — it looks upside down, and yet it is one of the finest hexagrams in the book.

Today is Thursday 3 September 2026, the 22nd day of the seventh lunar month of the Bing-Wu year, a Geng-Chen day, in the Chu-shu solar term, under the Completion officer. The Chen branch, Earth, generates the Geng stem, Metal — the calendar calls that the lower lifting the upper.

Peace supplies the half the calendar leaves out: passage comes not only from below rising, but from above agreeing to come down.

What does Hexagram 11 mean?

Peace is the 11th hexagram: Kun, Earth, above; Qian, Heaven, below. The judgement reads "the small departs, the great approaches. Good fortune, success." The word Tai means to pass through freely.

The three lower lines are all yang, the three upper all yin: the strength sits entirely inside.

Why is Heaven placed below Earth?

Because the breath of Heaven is light and rises, while the breath of Earth is heavy and sinks. Put Heaven underneath and the two currents travel toward each other and meet. The commentary calls this "heaven and earth unite and all things flow".

That is the sharp point: flow or blockage does not depend on who stands above, but on whether the two move toward each other — much as Increase is defined by direction, not by amount.

How does Peace differ from Standstill?

Hexagram 12, Standstill is Peace turned over: Heaven above, Earth below, the natural order. But then Heaven's breath keeps rising and Earth's keeps sinking, and the two drift apart forever. Its judgement is the exact reverse: "the great departs, the small approaches."

The two stand side by side and are mirror images: the distance between flow and blockage is exactly one flip thick.

Why does Peace suit a Geng-Chen day?

3 September 2026 is a Geng-Chen day under the Completion officer. The Chen branch, Earth, generates the Geng stem, Metal — the current moves from below upward. Peace also takes rising Earth-breath as its root, so both readings point the same way.

Completion suits closing off unfinished business. Put more plainly: to close something, the person in the higher position must step down first.

What does the third line say?

The third line is where the I Ching plants its heaviest warning in the middle of its finest hexagram: "no plain not followed by a slope, no going not followed by a return."

That sits at line three of six, only halfway. The top line is colder still: "the wall falls back into the moat" — the rampart collapses into the ditch that was dug to build it.

So what should you do today?

Take one thing that is stuck because both sides are waiting, and be the side that steps down first. The manager asks the employee first. The relative sends word first even though it is the other side's turn.

Auspicious hours today include 7-9am and 9-11am, enough for a call you have been postponing.

Do not read this hexagram as a promise of ease. Peace means both sides agreeing to move toward each other, remade every single day — something all 64 hexagrams repeat in their own ways.
