The Six Lines Explained
First Line (Nine at the Beginning)
"Qian long wu yong — The hidden dragon does not act"
The dragon is still concealed; action is premature. This is the opening stage: inner strength is accumulating but the timing is not ripe. Stay humble, prepare quietly, and avoid hasty moves.
Second Line (Nine in the Second Place)
"Jian long zai tian — The dragon appears in the field; it furthers one to see the great man"
Your talent begins to be recognised. It is favourable to meet mentors and widen your circle. A good moment to act, provided you keep your modesty.
Third Line (Nine in the Third Place)
"Junzi zhong ri qian qian — The superior man is creatively active all day, and at nightfall still alert as if in danger"
A demanding, testing stage. Diligence by day and caution by night are both required. Sustained effort and vigilance keep you free of blame.
Fourth Line (Nine in the Fourth Place)
"Huo yue zai yuan, wu jiu — Wavering flight over the depths; no blame"
At times you feel the urge to leap forward, at times to step back and observe. Weigh advance against retreat and wait for the right moment.
Fifth Line (Nine in the Fifth Place)
"Fei long zai tian — The dragon flies in the heavens; it furthers one to see the great man"
The most auspicious line: the peak of success and authority. Conditions favour large undertakings and public influence.
Top Line (Nine at the Top)
"Kang long you hui — The arrogant dragon will have cause to repent"
Flying too high brings regret. A warning against complacency and overreach. Know when to stop.
The Transformed Hexagram
When Qian is cast with a moving line, it transforms into a different hexagram according to the position of that line — for example a moving first line yields Gou (Coming to Meet, #44), a moving fifth line yields Da You (Great Possession, #14). The resulting hexagram shows the direction the situation is heading, so read it together with the moving line for the full picture.
Applications by Area of Life
Work & Career
A favourable period for launching a venture, seeking promotion or starting a new project. Check which line is moving to know which stage you are in and avoid acting at the wrong time.
Love & Relationships
Qian embodies strong, initiating yang energy. It is a hexagram of positive beginnings — suitable for confessing feelings or making a major decision — but avoid impatience and imposing your will.
Health
Qian belongs to the Metal element, associated with the lungs, head and bones. A reminder to protect your health during high-intensity periods of work.
Wealth
Financially auspicious when you act at the right moment. Avoid investing while at the top line, where overconfidence easily turns into risk.
